Police: Man smashes squad car window with metal pipe; officer injured

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police say a man with a lengthy arrest record is in custody after injuring an officer on the city's west side on Tuesday afternoon, October 11th.

An officer was on patrol near Teutonia and Center around 3:30 p.m. when a 25-year-old man walked up to the officer’s squad car and using a metal pipe, smashed the front passenger side window. Small shards of glass sprayed the officer and injured his eyes.

The suspect began to run away, but the officer and a responding officer were able to take the suspect into custody a short distance away.

The injured officer was treated at a hospital for irritation to his eyes. He returned to duty later that evening.

Officials say the suspect has an arrest record dating back to 2003. He now faces potential charges of battery to law enforcement officer, resisting an officer, and damage to property.

The officer injured in this story is 32 years old -- and has been with MPD for two years.
