Police identify man fatally shot near 39th and Garfield

MILWAUKEE -- Just ten days after a triple shooting, neighbors at 39th and Garfield in Milwaukee heard shots ring out again on Saturday, June 23rd. This time, the shooting was fatal.

Monday, June 25th, Milwaukee police officials released the name of the man killed in Saturday's shooting. He is 22-year-old Brandon Byrd.

Police were called to the scene around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday.  Police say Byrd and a 23-year-old woman had just put their infant in a car, when they were approached by a suspect who opened fire. 

The woman was shot in her leg.  She was taken to Froedtert Hospital and was released.  Byrd died in a nearby alley from his injuries.  The infant was not injured.

"There was an infant that was being secured in the back of the girlfriend's vehicle when the suspect approached and engaged in the gunfire with the deceased," Lt. Kenneth Grams with the Milwaukee Police Department said.

Neighbor James Wilkins spoke with the female victim moments after she was shot.

"She was bleeding.  She said, 'I think I'm shot!' I said, 'turn around and let me see.'  She turned and I said, 'yeah, you've been shot!'" Wilkins said.

Police searched the neighborhood for witnesses.  Investigators removed bullets from nearby homes and a church for evidence. 

Police say their investigation into this incident is ongoing, and no one is in custody.

Ambulances and police cars have become a common sight at 39th and Garfield.  On June 13th, three teens were injured in a triple shooting.  On May 30th, human remains were discovered in a sewer just two blocks away.
