Police said no arrests had been made. They're not sure at this point whether the home was targeted.

"It doesn't get any worse than a child so young. It's one of the worst things that can happen," said Inspector Timothy Heier with MPD.

Milwaukee Alderman Russell Stamper issued the following statement on this case:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the 13-year-old girl who was shot and killed in her home last night. It is a tragedy that another innocent child’s life has been cut short over nothing. While I am both hurt and angry about this senseless death, the family needs the love and support of the community right now. I encourage acts of comfort, kindness, and generosity on their behalf.

"We as a community have to do better. We have to put an end to this reckless violence and to the shootings that end up hurting innocent people and children.

"The Milwaukee Police Department reports the shooting happened in the 2700 block of N. 13th St. last night at 7:47 p.m. I urge anyone with ANY information regarding who did this to call MPD at 414-935-7360 immediately."
