On first day of 2013, first murder of 2012 remains unsolved

MILWAUKEE -- On New Year's Day 2013, the first murder of 2012 remains unsolved. 23-year-old Travon Johnson was killed on 29th Street near Townsend on January 1st, 2012. Now, Johnson's family is looking to the public for help solving this case.

Police say Johnson, also known as "Monte," was shot in his car.

Johnson's family members told FOX6 News it happened after a New Year's party. They say they are desperate for answers one year after their loved one lost his life.

"Please, if you know anything, just come forward. Please. Monte did not deserve this at all. My nephew didn't deserve this. He cries every day for his daddy," Johnson's sister Kenyatta Evans said.

Family and friends gathered on Tuesday, January 1st for a vigil in Johnson's honor. One year later, his mother still needed to be consoled over the loss of her son and the unanswered question of why.

Family members described Johnson as loving and always there when they needed him. Without him, they say there is a void.

While Johnson's family continues to look for answers, Johnson's aunt had a message: "I don't know why people do what they do -- why they take people's lives, but we need to stop it. We need to get together and put ourselves together, and put the guns down, because we're only ruining ourselves and ruining other people's lives, that's what we need to do," Michelle Sconiers said.

A family member said police keep them informed on the case, but Johnson's killer has not yet been found.
