MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating an incident during which a gunshot was fired in the area of an occupied squad car and the bullet struck the squad.

Incident near 37th and Burleigh, Milwaukee

The shooting occurred around 1:45 p.m. Friday March 31st near 37th and Burleigh. Police blocked parts of the roads trying to figure out who was shooting and why.

“I mean, that’s very difficult situation for anyone to go through.  I mean, nobody is expecting a bullet to come crashing through the windshield of their car.  So, like anybody experiencing something like that, the officers were very shaken and alarmed by this incident," said Assistant Chief James Harpole.

The aftermath of the startling shooting played out for hours.

As two Milwaukee police officers sat in a parked squad, a bullet struck the windshield. They were just one block away from Milwaukee Police District Seven.

"The officers are very shaken and very alarmed by this incident," said Harpole.

Neither officer was hit by the gunfire. However, one suffered minor injuries from glass shattered by the bullet. It's unclear whether they were the intended targets.

"It's disheartening to keep seeing stuff like this happen when you are trying to get kids on the right path," Jeffery Becton, works nearby.

Jeffery Becton helps run a youth center near the scene. He came out to see lights and squads and an extensive investigation.

"The street's blocked off, police with weapons drawn and dogs. It's too much of this," said Becton.

Investigators go door-to-door looking for witnesses and seeking a possible suspect -- hoping for clarity after a shooting leaves an area shaken.

"It's just sad to say it just keeps happening," Becton said.

Again, no one has been arrested at this time.

The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
