New website provides forecast, UV index info. to beachgoers

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With hot weather in the forecast for the remainder of the week, Milwaukee County Parks, in partnership with the Sea Grant Institute and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, has announced a new “one-stop-shop” beach website at milwcountybeaches.org.

Weather forecast, nearshore marine forecast, and information on wind, air-quality, the UV index, and bacterial monitoring are updated on the website as information becomes available on government monitoring sites.

While some measures such as air-quality and the UV index apply to the general Milwaukee area, bacterial monitoring is beach-specific. Milwaukee County Parks beaches are Bradford, Bay View, Bender, Tietjen (Doctors Park), Grant, McKinley, and South Shore. Information on Shorewood’s Atwater Park Beach and Whitefish Bay’s Klode Park Beach are also included on the website.

With sunbathing, sand volleyball, soccer, beach yoga and other out-of-the-water activities, Milwaukee County’s beaches are a popular destination even on days when swimming is not advised.

The new website is funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and designed by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the Milwaukee County Parks.
