MPS students gear up for school with Backpack Buddies

MILWAUKEE (WITI)--Smiles came across the faces of hundreds of kids at Ralph H. Metcalfe School Friday.

One-by-one the kids lined up to get a free backpack filled with school supplies.

"It was awesome," third grader Trionte Prince said. "If my teachers say get your pencils and stuff out. I have it, right away."

Prince is one of 200 kids at Metcalfe School getting a bag.  It's part of the Backpack Buddies program.

"We really want these kids to be excited about learning and to stay in school," Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President Bonnie Bellehumeur said.

A partnership between Sendik's Food Markets and Feeding America make the program possible.

"If we can provide families with the tools that they need so that their entire family can be successful, it really makes us feel like we're doing our job," Sendik's Margaret Harris said.

The backpacks will be handed out to a thousand kids grades kindergarten through third throughout MPS.
