Milwaukee police officer accused of using excessive force

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee police officer appears in court on Friday, October 4th -- suspected of doing something that may make you cringe. Investigators say the officer, Rodney Lloyd, went too far this summer while handling a man who was in custody.

In his 20 years with the Milwaukee Police Department, Lloyd has dealt with plenty of defendants. On Friday, he became one himself. He now faces one count of misconduct in public office.

That unlawful act is alleged to have happened on June 16th at the District 2 headquarters. According to the criminal complaint, Lloyd was booking a man who was in custody following a domestic incident. The complaint states Lloyd was escorting the man into the booking room when surveillance video showed Lloyd "forcibly drive" the man's head "into the concrete block wall."

The video also recorded sound. When the man asked Lloyd why he did that, Lloyd allegedly said it was because the man had earlier said something "to the effect that he could take Lloyd out."

An Internal Affairs investigation concluded Lloyd had used excessive force. The information was sent to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office which then charged Lloyd.

In a statement, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said, "Restraint is one of our core values and we take our values very seriously."

If convicted, Lloyd could face up to $10,000 in fines and three-and-a-half years in prison.
