Milwaukee police detective grazed by bullet, suspect now in custody

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee police detective was grazed by a bullet fired by a suspect armed with a semi-automatic handgun during an investigation near Teutonia and Villard on just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th.

The detective, who was not injured, returned fire along with another detective.

The suspect fled southbound on Teutonia, tossing his handgun on the front lawn of a home. The suspect was quickly apprehended by responding officers.

The 21-year-old suspect from Milwaukee has a criminal record -- and is a person of interest the June 17th homicide at the US Gas station on N. Green Bay Avenue. The suspect was not injured as a result of this incident.

The detective who was grazed by gunfire is 35-years-old with 17 years of service. He is assigned to MPD's Central Investigations Division.

Neighbors tell FOX6 News they saw a PT Cruiser pulled over by two detectives.

"(The suspect) exited that vehicle firing. They were under fire immediately," Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said Thursday.

Chief Flynn says the suspect in this case was under investigation in connection with the gas station homicide.

There, 34-year-old Bryson Brown was shot and killed.

Friends and family members gathered on Wednesday evening to remember him.

"We just tired of, you know, losing loved ones. He's going to have his first child. He won't be here to see it -- girl or boy," Brown's loved one told FOX6 News.

Police say the man who pulled the trigger on Thursday isn't Brown's killer -- but they say he may have information on who is.

"He's not considered the suspect, but clearly, today he brought a world of hurt on himself. We've got young people out here, heavily armed, with no particular fear of law enforcement," Chief Flynn said.
