Milwaukee lighting company could benefit from mining legislation

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A controversial mining bill is weaving its way through the state Capitol. Critics say it's being pushed through for an out-of-state company. However, one Milwaukee company has said this mining legislation may be good for them as well.

While the city of Milwaukee is far from the proposed mining sites in Wisconsin, the business of mining could have a direct impact.

Scott Fredrick is the CEO of Phoenix Products -- a full-service factory in Milwaukee with a focus on LED technology.

"It would be a significant contract for us if we were able to get it. The high-intensity flood  would go on the front of a mining shovel and illuminate the face of a mine and allow the operators to work efficiently and safely 24/7," Fredrick said.

About 120 people work at the plant right now. Fredrick says that number could jump with the passing of a mining bill. New orders for flood lights would mean the need for more machinists and welders -- all local jobs.

Opponents of the bill not only argue the biggest beneficiary would be an out-of-state company but the mine would destroy Wisconsin's environment.

"We seem hell bent on going forward with a deeply flawed bill that won't create any jobs other than the lawyers that are going to be litigating this for many years to come," Rep. Cory Mason (D - Racine) said.

"If they can do it safely and responsibly in Minnesota, I'm sure Wisconsin can do it safely and responsibly as well," Fredrick said.

The party line 12 to four vote on Monday, February 25th sends the bill tot he state Senate on Wednesday. If it passes, the Assembly will take up the bill next week.
