Milwaukee County activates heat plan

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With high temperatures blanketing southeast WIsconsin, a number of Milwaukee County departments have emergency heat plans in place.

Department on Aging

The Milwaukee County Department on Aging (MCDA) is working with all of their partner agencies to make daily phone and in home checks on vulnerable residents. They are also asking people to check on their elderly friends, family and neighbors.

MCDA is a member of the City of Milwaukee’s Heat Task Force and is working with city agencies on steps that should be taken in the event of a heat advisory or heat emergency. During heat advisories or emergencies some senior centers will stay open for extended hours to provide a place for county residents to cool off.

Call 414-289-6874 for a list of cooling center sites and hours. More information on heat and the elderly can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Department of Health and Human Services

The Department of Health & Human Services’ Community Services Branch is helping local agencies educate high-risk clients on heat precautions. All Community Based Residential Facilities are air conditioned and staff is on hand 24/7 to watch for signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke. During a heat advisory, case managers will make daily face to face or phone contact with clients.
