Military plane on training mission, headed for Milwaukee forced to make emergency landing
WEST VIRGINIA (WITI) -- An Air Force Major confirms with FOX6 News that a plane headed from North Carolina to Milwaukee had to land in West Virginia on Friday, August 8th because the pilot had some concerns while in flight.
The 440th C-130 plane was on a training mission, according to Air Force Major Lisa Ray -- at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
The plane had taken off from Pope Field to conduct an air medical evacuation training mission. It was headed for Milwaukee.
Major Ray tells FOX6 News the pilot decided to make an emergency landing at an airport in West Virginia for safety's sake -- and so that they could figure out what the problem was.
This, after someone on board the plane saw smoke.
We're told 35 people were on board the plane.
The plane landed safely in West Virginia. The plane was met by emergency crews -- and all 35 people on board were checked out.
No one had to be hospitalized.
It was unclear why the plane was headed for Milwaukee.
It is also unclear what caused the smoke in the plane.
Following the landing in West Virginia -- the plane headed back to North Carolina.
This incident comes one day after a 128th Air Refueling Wing had to land at Mitchell International Airport after experiencing hydraulic troubles while in the air.
