Man arrested after police pursuit in Waukesha County

WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- A 28-year-old Milwaukee man was taken into custody following a police pursuit in a stolen vehicle Tuesday, September 10th. The pursuit began on eastbound I-94 near Springdale Road after the suspect stole a Straight Truck.

According to officials, the man stole a large white Straight Truck that contained liquor around 7:19 a.m., while the driver was inside a Piggly Wiggly store. The Hartland Police Department initiated an investigation and information about the vehicle was sent out to surrounding jurisdictions.

Authorities say a citizen with a police scanner spotted the vehicle on eastbound I-94 and called officials. Squads from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, City of Brookfield, City of New Berlin, Village of Hartland and Town of Brookfield Police Departments, as well as the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to assist.

A Waukesha County Sheriff's Deputy located the vehicle on eastbound I-94 near Springdale Road. With the assistance of the Town of Brookfield Police Department they attempted to stop the vehicle.  However, the suspect continued eastbound on I-94 -- swiping a vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene.

Police say Stop Sticks were deployed and the suspect exited I-94 at Moorland Road, striking three more vehicles on the off-ramp. As the suspect continued northbound, he lost control of the truck, struck a sign and drove into the ditch on Carpenter Road.

After crashing the stolen vehicle, the suspect exited the truck and fled the scene on foot. He was caught by officials after a short foot pursuit.

He was transported to Waukesha Memorial Hospital for medical clearance as a precautionary measure after being involved in the accident.

The suspect will be referred to the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office for charges including; theft, operating motor vehicle without owner’s consent, knowingly fleeing an officer, hit & run and several traffic related charges.
