Magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Marina del Rey, Calif.

(CNN) -- A shallow magnitude-2.9 earthquake struck 2 miles north of El Segundo, California, on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The USGS said the quake took place 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) below the surface of the ground in highly populated Los Angeles County.

Initial reports had the earthquake 2 miles southeast of Marina del Rey.
