Lt. Brian Murphy supports Season of Giving Blood Drive

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's been nearly a year and a half since the tragic Sikh Temple shooting in Oak Creek, but retired Oak Creek Lt. Brian Murphy remembers it like it was yesterday.

"The entire shooting incident itself only took 30 seconds, but that 30 seconds lasts a lifetime," said Lt. Murphy.

Lt. Murphy was shot 17 times.

Although he has donated blood for years, he never thought he would need it in return.

"It's a selfless act based solely upon I'm giving something of myself to, it doesn't matter who, to help them in their dire moments," said Lt. Murphy.

That's why Lt. Murphy is supporting the BloodCenter of Wisconsin's Season of Giving Blood Drive by rolling up his sleeve to save a life.

"I haven't donated in close to two years, but I am today. I'm looking forward to it," said Lt. Murphy.

Right now there is a desperate need for O-negative blood and just one donation can save up to three lives.

"37% of the population is eligible to donate but unfortunately only 5% of that population donates blood so you can see that the need is always really great," said Fay Spano, BloodCenter of Wisconsin Director of Public Relations.

The first person to donate blood at the event on Thursday, December 26th was Santa Claus.

"Santa is supposed to be a role model, so to say, so I'm here being a role model for the adults to give blood," said Santa.

Many people donated blood in honor of Lt. Murphy, including Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards, and members of the Sikh Temple.

"If I can give blood and help another individual like him, and help other people, I'm honored," said Sikh Temple member Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka as he donated blood.

Lt. Murphy's actions on August 5th, 2012 continue to inspire and impact countless lives.

The Season of Giving Blood Drive is December 26th and 27th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Peck Center in the Milwaukee County Zoo. You can make an appointment by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO.
