"I'm having fun and not worrying about the stress I'm having:" Camp helps kids with parents in the military
OCONOMOWOC (WITI) -- For as long as Cailyn Danick can remember, her mother has been in the Army. Although sharing her mom with the military is a challenge, she has found comfort in her annual trip to summer camp.
"I'm having fun and not worrying about all of the stress I'm having or anything that's pulling me down," said Danick.
Camp Yellow Ribbon is a week long camp hosted by Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin.
It's for kids between the ages of seven and 14 with a loved one in the military.
"The kids get so close and they really support each other and it's really great to see that transformation," said Camp Yellow Ribbon Respite Supervisor Bridget Mangan.
Along with participating in fun team building exercises, the kids learn how to positively cope with their emotions.
"We have Mental Health America that is here talking to the kids -- learning about themselves and promoting self-esteem," said Mangan.
They also make crafts to take home to lift them up when they're down.
"When I'm feeling sad I'll be like 'oh Camp Yellow Ribbon' and I'll just look through it and I'll remember all of the memories that we have here," said Danick.
But most importantly, the children build incredible friendships with others who understand.
"We grew like a really, really strong relationship and I just feel like I want to come back to get that relationship back because we had so much stuff in common," said Danick.
Although Danick will be too old to go to camp next year, she believes the memories and friends she has made will last a lifetime.
