"I just hope it makes their day:" Help send Valentines to troops serving overseas

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Just about everyone has made a Valentine's Day card, but they usually go to someone you know and love.

Now you can make a difference in the life of a soldier you've never met.

"Those that are far away don't have that opportunity to be there and give them a hug and hopefully this will be that hug from home," said Max A. Sass and Sons Funeral Homes General Manager Greg Fischer.

Max A. Sass and Sons Funeral Homes is one of nearly 1,000 Veterans and Family Memorial Care providers nationwide participating in Operation Valentine.

"I just hope it makes their day. They're doing so much for us we can do this little thing for them," said Max. A Sass and Sons Funeral Homes Owner Jim Sass.

The community is asked to make special Valentine's Day cards, which Max A. Sass will send to our troops serving overseas.

Along with collecting cards, the funeral home is asking for used cell phones.

"They get recycled and then we get minutes that get sent overseas to our soldiers so that they can phone home on special occasions like Christmas and Valentines," said Fischer.

Both a phone call and a card can make a big difference.

So far the funeral home has seen an outpouring of support from the community by collecting boxes of phones and thousands of cards.

"I just cannot believe the amount we've had," said Sass.

Max A. Sass and Sons is looking to collect as many Valentine's Day cards as possible.
