Gun show draws large crowd in Fond du Lac

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- Those looking for a parking spot Saturday at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds needed to be patient. Space was hard to come by as a large crowd packed a gun show in the main expo building.

Jeff Nass, President of Wisconsin FORCE, says President Obama's proposal for stricter gun laws led concerned firearm owners to stock up Saturday.

"They wanna protect their family, they want you to have the ability if you choose so, to protect your family so it is scary for some people," he said.

The proposals call for background checks on all gun sales, ban the sale of assault weapons, and ban the sale of high-capacity magazines. Nass says that would only affect law-abiding gun owners.

"It does nothing to stop the bad guys," he said.

Once a month, Don Timmerman of Milwaukee protests area gun stores. However, the anti-gun activist also believes the proposals would have a small effect on crime.

"Someone can go in the street and buy a gun anytime undercover and they're certainly not gonna ask for a background check," said.

Instead, Timmerman would like to see gun owners voluntarily give up any firearms they wouldn't use for hunting.

"I think people just have to make up their minds that they're not gonna use guns," he said.

Nass says that's not happening. Instead, he'd says better firearm education would curb gun crime.

"Have them teach that their senior year of high school," he said, "They can't get a permit until they're 21 but educate them on their rights and that these aren't scary."
