MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Fire officials responded to a house fire early Friday morning, July 25th near Burleigh and Palmer. Emergency crews were dispatched to the home around 1:30 a.m.

Officials say three individuals were home at the time — and were able to escape to safety on their own.

Authorities say two people, a grandmother and her 8-year-old grandson, sustained injuries as a result of the fire.  The woman sustained a broken ankle and an injury to her head, and the 8-year-old boy sustained an injury to his arm.

A family member tells FOX6 News her brother , who was in the downstairs part of the home when the fire broke out, woke up to flames so close that it burnt his hair. The family member tells FOX6 News her brother then yelled for his mother and 8-year-old nephew, who were sleeping upstairs.

"The adult male woke up, smelled the smoke or saw the fire, got out quick and made a call. The people from the second floor were able to get out the windows in the back from the second floor," Battalion Chief Michael Blackwood said.

No additional details have been released.
