Government reform plan unveiled to skepticism in Milwaukee Co.
MILWAUKEE CO. (WITI) -- Several Milwaukee County supervisors say they have a plan that will save taxpayers big bucks. But many believe the plan unveiled on Friday, February 8th is only intended to save their own paychecks from being slashed.
A proposal is in the works in Madison that would make Milwaukee County Supervisors part-time employees. It would also cut their salaries from $50,000 to $15,000.
However, Milwaukee County Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic says before any changes are made, she wants to hear from you.
"This commitment is really the first of its kind and it is the exact opposite of the secret meetings taking place in Madison," said Dimitrijevic.
In a Friday news conference, Dimitrijevic announced she is launching "OUR Milwaukee County." She wants county residents to weigh in on what changes should be made.
"Our vision is thinking big. It's time to think big, the time is now," said Dimitrijevic.
The Milwaukee County Board has approved an audit of county government to see where cuts could be made.
But not all supervisors are on board with Friday's announcement. One supervisor did not know a thing about it. Dianne Alexander has battled other supervisors about reforming the Board.
"I have to wonder if it is a delay tactic. I'm not really sure what all of their goals are," said Alexander.
Dan Cody, President of Park People, a parks advocate group, points out there have been multiple audits of the County Board already. He says the data already shows there is need for change.
"I think that is just a clever way to kick the can down the road at a time when we need real action here in Milwaukee," said Cody.
Dimitrijevic believes she can cut 20% of her department's budget on her own. No details have been released on when or where the listening sessions will take place.
