Golden Guernsey dairy workers meet with union leaders
WAUKESHA (WITI) -- They were locked out of their jobs and waited days to find out they were laid off. On Thursday, January 17th, nearly 70 former employees of the Golden Guernsey dairy plant in Waukesha met with their union leaders.
Union leaders say they cannot talk about what was discussed at their meeting. But employees who walked out say they are still confused.
Workers say one of the biggest problems is that all of their personal belongings are still in the plant -- guarded by security. One worker tells FOX6 News, getting a job as a mechanic has been a problem, since all of his tools are still in his locker.
But while workers have heard little, FOX6 News was able to get some answers. Open Gate Capitol, the dairy's owner, wrote Thursday it is no longer in charge of the plant after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
So who is in charge? Court papers indicate a lawyer in New Jersey has been appointed as a trustee. A source close to the trustee says plans are in the works to allow former employees back in the plant, possibly as early as next week.
FOX6 News has also learned the dairy plant is worth between $10 million and $50 million. A source tells FOX6 News the trustee is working around the clock to sell the plant.
Workers say they are not confident the plan will reopen.
