Girls' Day to become regular City of Milwaukee program

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Common Council approved a resolution on Tuesday, July 23rd, that will make a daylong event that encourages female participation in public service an annual city program.

The event, called Girls Day, has been held for the past three years by Alderwoman Milele Coggs and is designed to give young women the opportunity to make new contacts and explore future career opportunities in public service.

Coggs is currently the only alderwoman on the Common Council. She is one of just 14 women in the history of the City of Milwaukee to have served on the Common Council. She maintains that it is a "club" that is far too exclusive.

“I believe my fellow Council members have seen the value of Girls’ Day, and recognize that it is a positive program that can nurture and empower future leaders of our city,” Coggs said in a statement.

This resolution states that its purpose is “to focus attention on the importance of girls and young women in the community, and to develop innovative strategies to empower them to overcome barriers to reach their full potential as the next generation of leaders.”
