Four Milwaukee County communities without sex offender ordinances; is yours one of them?
WHITEFISH BAY (WITI) -- The City of Milwaukee passed new sex offender ordinances last month, leaving just four communities in the county without rules stating where sex offenders can live.
The Village Board in Whitefish Bay is discussing the issue Monday, August 4th.
Police Chief Michael Young is recommending the city restrict sex offenders from living within 1,500 feet of schools, day cares, parks and areas considered "child safety zones."
"I can't even believe with all the schools and private schools and just other communities, that's not already in place," said Fox Point resident Alita Jeralts. "If neighboring communities aren't doing similar things, we're not all going to have that feeling of being safe from the situation."
River Hills Village President Bob Brunner says an ordinance in his community is also in the works.
"It should be an obligation of the community of where the sex offenders are, and to put an undue burden on communities that don't have any sex offenders would not be an appropriate things to do," said Brunner.
It's possible Whitefish Bay could pass an ordinance as soon as tonight. Brunner says River Hills will discuss the ordinance at a September board meeting.
That leaves Hales Corners and Shorewood as the only other communities without sex offender ordinances.
