Fond du Lac County fatal crash; teen struck after exiting vehicle on I-41

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 22 that killed a 14-year-old boy.

What we know:
It happened around 9:30 p.m. on I-41 near Winnebago Street in the Town of Friendship.
Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound vehicle had pulled over on the median side of the interstate – and some individuals had exited the vehicle.

A second car then struck the first vehicle and during the collision, a passenger who was outside the car was struck and died at the scene.
Interstate 41 was closed for approximately 4.5 hours.

What we know:
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office said upon further investigation it was revealed there was an argument occurring within the vehicle and the driver stopped on the median side while still partially in the lane of traffic. Occupants got out of the vehicle to continue the argument on the side of I-41.
A 14-year-old male, who was a rear passenger, got out of the passenger side of the vehicle and stepped into the lane of the traffic where he was struck by another southbound vehicle.

All occupants of the stopped vehicle are from Detroit, Mich.
Occupants included:
- Glenn Wheaton, age 59
- Desmond Wilson, age 31
- A 15-year-old female
- The 14-year-old deceased male
The driver of the striking vehicle has been identified as 20-year-old Evan Finnegan of Wauwatosa.
What's next:
The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
