Focus on women who served during 148th Memorial Day parade

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The focus of the 148th consecutive Memorial Day parade in Milwaukee was those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country -- specifically women who have served in the military.

The "Donut Dollies" served during the Vietnam and Korean wars.

Diane Shufelt was one of about 600 Donut Dollies serving in the Vietnam War.

"We ran recreation centers and put on recreation programs for U.S. service men," Shufelt said.

The parade also honored women currently serving.

"There`s a lot of contributions that women in the military have made past and present and sometimes we just don`t get the recognition that some of our male counterparts do. And I think this is absolutely an opportunity for us," Captain Shannon Triggs with the 128th Air Refueling Wing said.

The parade was about 140 entrants strong.

It ended on a solemn note with the laying of wreaths representing each branch of the military at the War Memorial reflecting pool.
