Firefighters douse apartment fire at 87th & Fond du Lac

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee firefighters doused an apartment fire at 87th and Fond du Lac Ave on the city's northwest side Tuesday morning, April 24th. Until water was sprayed on the building, the flames and smoke were so thick, two people had to jump out of the building to save themselves.

The fire broke around just after 8:30 a.m. and was brought under control by 9:30 a.m. Investigators believe the fire started on the first floor and spread to the second floor.

Witnesses told emergency crews someone dropped a child from the top floor and a bystander caught that child. The mother of the child and another teenager also jumped to safety.  The woman and the teenager suffered minor injuries.  Officials say the baby is okay.

Jamease Brown has an apartment in the building. She had just left for work before it broke out Tuesday morning. "This is my house. This is everything I have, it's gone. It's just gone," said Brown.

The American Red Cross is helping victims who are now homeless as a result of the fire.

A fire investigation team will now work to determine the cause and estimate the amount of damage.
