Firefighter falls through floor during firefight in Riverwest neighborhood

MILWAUKEE -- A firefighter fell through the floor but was not hurt while fighting a fire in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood on Wednesday morning, September 26th.

The fire broke out in a home near Booth Avenue and Wright Street just before 6 a.m. 

The firefighter who fell through the floor landed on the basement steps -- about eight feet below. He was evacuated from the building and checked out at the scene. 

Officials say one woman was discovered inside the home when the fire started. The woman was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with second-degree burns on her hands. Officials say no one else from the other house was hurt.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist six people who were displaced.

The home sustained $25,000 in damage to the building and $10,000 in damage to contents. The neighboring house sustained $5,000 in damage to the building.

At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.
