Fire damages townhouse on W. Hampton Ave.

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a townhouse fire on W. Hampton Avenue Wednesday morning, June 13th. Family members and neighbors say a woman set her bed on fire, though fire officials have yet to announce an official cause.

Officials say no one was injured in the fire that caused $20,000 in damage to the building.

FOX6 News spoke with the mother of the woman who lives inside the townhouse, who said her daughter came to her and said, "I'm tired, and I'm done with this." The mother also said her daughter sprayed lighter fluid on her bed and set it on fire.

The woman's boyfriend told FOX6 News he received a text message from the woman, and the words in the text message may implicate his girlfriend in the fire.

Neighbors say the woman walked down the street to her mother's house after setting the fire.

"I feel like she knew what she was doing. She knew right from wrong. She knew to take her son down the street. She knew to let somebody know that the house was on fire," neighbor Shipria Carter said.

Neighbors said they are thankful they were able to make it out of the building alive.

"If nobody hadn't woken me up when they did, our house would've been on fire too," neighbor Crystal Ewing said.

Shay Jones lives next door to the apartment that caught fire. Jones and others saw smoke coming out of the bedroom of the apartment Wednesday morning.

"I was sleeping, and the next door neighbors came beating down my door, like, 'come outside, get out of the house, the house is on fire,'" Jones said.

The Milwaukee Fire Department says this fire remains under investigation.
