MILWAUKEE -- So often we hear about cyber attacks on computers, but authorities want you to remember that cell phones, which are essentially mini computers, can be just as vulnerable.

FBI officials say there are some simple things you can do to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

But FBI officials do warn that even the most careful users can still become victims.

"The next thing you know is you get a message that says 'hey all your files are now encrypted and unless you pay us a certain amount you're not going to be able to access any of those files and you only have a limited amount of time to do so,'" Matt Petersen, FBI special agent said.

Officials say you should use an anti-virus app on your smartphone -- just as you use anti-virus programs on your computer.

If you think your phone is at risk, or you lose your phone, you should contact your cell phone provider right away.
