Election day will be a paid holiday for thousands of workers across the United States in 2016.
General Motors is one of many companies that have made election day a paid holiday. Others include: Ford Motor Company, Square, Hearst Publishing, Patagonia, Casper (a mattress company) and Thrillist (a digital media company).
Ford sent an email to workers saying "Every. Vote. Counts."
Outdoor clothing company Patagonia is closing all retail stores, its headquarters in California and its distribution center in Nevada.
There is no federal law requiring workers to get time off to vote, and state laws vary.
