Edwood Hastings charged in hit-and-run in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- He's been in custody since Monday. Now, 48-year-old Edwood Hastings of Milwaukee faces a criminal charge of hit-and-run resulting in death in connection with a crash that happened on Milwaukee's east side on Sunday evening, August 11th.

According to the four-page criminal complaint, Hastings hit and killed Andrea Barringer as she was crossing the street at Farwell and Irving. He then allegedly fled from the scene.

The complaint indicates on Monday, August 12th, Hastings walked in to the Municipal Court building in Milwaukee and turned himself in -- indicating "he was the person driving the tan SUV that had hit someone last night on N. Farwell Avenue." He told the officer who he turned himself in to that "he briefly stopped but freaked out and drove home." He apparently "wanted to see his family before he turned himself in."

The complaint also indicates Barringer was with three friends having dinner at the Comet Cafe. Her friend tells officers when they were done, they walked out and crossed the street. The friend almost made it to the other side when she heard a loud crash behind her -- and saw Barringer flying through the air.

The complaint says Barringer was thrown off the windshield of Hastings' SUV. Another witness also noticed the headlights of the SUV were not on.

If convicted, Hastings faces up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

Meanwhile, new safety measures were put in place at Farwell and Irving in Milwaukee. A City of Milwaukee crew painted a cross walk at the intersection on Wednesday, August 14th.
