KENOSHA COUNTY (WITI) -- The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a case of alleged animal abuse in Brighton Township.
Officials say their investigation originated at a farm along State Highway 75 around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd. Sheriff’s detectives and deputies on the scene discovered at least 52 deceased calves in and around the barns on the property. There were 15 live calves found at this location as well. Those calves were removed from the property and moved to a safe location.
Investigators say the probe resulted in the discovery of a second farm, operated by the same family as the first, in the Paris Township. At least 30 deceased calves were found there -- as well as at least 100 live cattle. Those animals are being evaluated by a large animal veterinarian.
The owners of both properties have cooperated with investigators.
Officials say the cause of the animal deaths has not yet been determined and may have been illness. However, the initial investigation has revealed evidence of neglect in addition to readily apparent long-term deplorable conditions.
Investigators are trying to figure out how so many cattle died and if charges are necessary.
Kenosha County Sheriff's Department says the property owners are being cooperative. It may take days, if not weeks before this investigation is complete.
