Did a trip to the chiropractor cause a woman to have a stroke?!

KANSAS (WITI) -- Did a trip to the chiropractor cause a woman to have a stroke?

FOX6's sister station, FOX4 in Kansas City reports the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have issued a new statement about neck manipulation -- a treatment done by chiropractors and other health professionals that may be associated with stroke.

Earlier this year, FOX4KC did a story about Genny Hale -- who had a stroke one day after having her neck adjusted at the chiropractor's office.

She went to the emergency room with sudden arm numbness and dizziness.

“That’s one of the first questions they ask -- if I had ever seen a chiropractor,” Hale told FOX4KC.

"Chiropractic manipulation of the neck can cause a stroke,” Dr. Karin Olds, a neurologist, told FOX4KC.

Dr. Olds says when the neck is mainpulated in any way, it can cause a tear or dissection in an artery wall. A clot forms, which can cause a stroke.

FOX4KC reports the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are warning that neck manipulation may be associated with strokes -- although it cannot be said with certainty that it causes strokes.

"I think it should be given a second thought if you're about to have (a neck adjustment) done," Hale said.
