Blood for dogs can only come from other dogs: Canine blood drive set for May 9th
GREENFIELD (WITI) -- There was a visit from Milwaukee police Thursday, April 16th at the Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals. This, as MPD K9 officers donated blood to raise awareness of the need for more canine blood donors.
Just like humans, dogs need blood transfusions when they get certain diseases or suffer trauma.
Police dogs constantly put their lives on the line -- but all dogs need blood, and blood for dogs can only come from other dogs.
"Most people do not know about this. In fact, they're shocked when we tell them. They're shocked when we say 'we have to give blood to your dog' and they don`t know that there is that type. Where are you getting that from? A human? No. It`s from another dog," Dr. Marla Lichtenberger said.
A blood drive will be held at the Milwaukee Police Neighborhood Task Force at 4715 W. Vliet Street on May 9th. There will be tons of activities, and the mascot for Hank the Ballpark Pup will be on hand to cheer on the blood donors. The first two-dozen people who donate at the event will receive a Hank the Dog bobblehead.
Dog owners and the general public are welcome to attend the following classes which include; Basic dog obedience offered by K9 trainer/Officer Todd Johnson, Canine first aid provided by Marla Lichtenberger, DVM, DACVECC and a General pet nutrition class.
Various pet friendly vendors will be on-site offering dog treats, ear cleanings and nail trimmings at discounted rates. In addition, The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADDACC) will be providing vaccinations and microchipping.
