Police say 65-year-old Saeed Sharwani of Brookfield, a clerk at the Citgo gas station on Whiterock Avenue at E. Moreland Boulevard was shot and killed during an armed robbery around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. It is the first homicide in Waukesha this year.

Based on surveillance video from inside the store (see below), two suspects entered the store with Halloween masks on and one produced a handgun.  The clerk confronted the armed suspect and the suspect shot the clerk in the chest -- before the two suspects fled the store.  At this point, police are unable to confirm whether the suspects fled in a vehicle.

Saeed Sharwani was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspects remain at large.

"This is extremely unusual for the city of Waukesha. The city of Waukesha by crime statistics and by observation is a very safe city to live in, but no one is immune to violent criminals coming to their city or acting out within their city. We'll look at every single lead with our detectives and other agencies in order to apprehend and bring these people to justice," Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said.

Suspect #1 is described as a black male with a medium build. He was wearing a tan jacket with a hood, a green Halloween face mask, checkered pajama-type pants, a blue surgical glove on one hand with a black glove on the other. He displayed a black semi-automatic handgun.

Suspect #2 is described as a male with a taller, thin build. His ethnicity is unknown. He was wearing a green Halloween mask and mostly dark clothing. Police say he entered the store behind suspect #1 and remained in the background.

All the commotion in the area woke Jamie Stratton around midnight.

"It was obvious they were looking for somebody. All the streets were blocked off. They put tape all around and they were looking at people's cars -- looking in backyards and stuff, in windows. We're just sad because we knew the guys that worked (at the gas station). It's scary, you know? It's a neighborhood. We have kids here. There's a lot of people here," Stratton said.

In recent weeks there have been several robberies in southeastern Wisconsin involving two suspects.  At this time, police are looking into the possibility the suspects in this fatal shooting may be connected to these robberies.  The suspects and the method of operation are similar in nature to the other robberies.

If anyone is able to identify the suspect(s) in this case, do not approach them as they are believed to be armed and dangerous.  Anyone with any information is asked to please contact the Waukesha Police Department/Detective Benitez at 262-524-3926.
