64-year-old Milwaukee man dies after hit-and-run crash; driver in custody



MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are on the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash near S. Layton Boulevard and W. Rogers Street in Milwaukee.

It happened around 5:15 p.m.

Police say a 64-year-old Milwaukee man was struck by a vehicle that was headed northbound -- as the man was crossing the street westbound on Rogers after exiting a County bus. The victim has been identified as David Montanez.

He died at the hospital.



Gus Sanchez saw the man on the ground -- surrounded by a handful of neighbors.

"I see a person in the street when I look out my window so I said' what happened? I`m not sure what it is,'" Sanchez said.

Neighbors say first responders did try CPR before taking the man away in an ambulance.

Police say the striking vehicle fled the scene -- but it was identified by witnesses.

The vehicle and driver were located a short distance from where the crash happened -- at a home.

The driver, a 73-year-old Milwaukee man is currently in custody.

This incident will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
