MADISON — Bill Clinton was in Madison on Wednesday to raise money for his wife's campaign, part of an increasing role the former president is playing in the 2016 race.

Reporters were blocked from going inside the private fundraiser at the Madison Club. The invitation to Democratic donors asked for at least $300 to attend
It cost $1,700 to get a photo with the former president, and $2,700 to attend a reception with him -- the maximum donation allowed under federal law.
After the two-hour event, a small group of people gathered on a sidewalk in downtown Madison and got to see Clinton for free. He spent about 90 seconds shaking hands and posing for photos.
When FOX6's Theo Keith asked Clinton to name his wife's key to victory in 2016, the former president responded, "Getting the most votes."

Bill Clinton has done that in Wisconsin twice -- carrying the state in both the 1992 presidential election and his 1996 reelection.

The guest list for the private fundraiser included former Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and at least two Democratic members of the state Legislature.
The former president is scheduled to headline 20 such fundraisers over the next month, the website Politico has reported.
Hillary Clinton was last in Wisconsin in September for a campaign stop in Milwaukee, and her campaign didn't make anyone available Wednesday to talk about the race.
Republicans blasted Hillary Clinton for having her husband do her fundraising work.
"She is not here. She should be here. And that goes to show you that she doesn`t want to come and meet Wisconsinites, the everyday voters that we have here," Rep. Jessie Rodriguez (R-Franklin) said.
The Republican National Committee issued this statement on Bill Clinton's Madison fundraiser:
“A quick fundraising stop by Bill Clinton won’t win back the trust of voters who have not only watched the FBI expand its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email scandal, but have also seen her consistently flip flop on important issues, and bizarrely blame 9/11 for her fundraising practices.” – Fred Brown, RNC spokesman
