DENVER -- The man who fell about 60 feet over a stairwell railing after Monday night's Broncos game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High has died, the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said Tuesday.
Jason Coy, 36, fell in the north side of the stadium just after the game ended at about 9:45 p.m., the Denver Fire Department said.
Witnesses and emergency personnel quickly treated Coy at the scene before he was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. Coy was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to officials.
The Denver Police Department said it is investigating the fall as a non-traffic accident, which is standard protocol. It said the initial investigation shows Coy was sitting on the railing and then fell about 60 feet.
“The Denver Broncos are extremely saddened to learn that Jason Coy, the fan who fell over a stairwell railing at Monday night’s game, has passed away,” the Broncos said in a statement. “Along with Stadium Management Company, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.”
It's not the first deadly fall at the stadium – in 2015 an intoxicated fan tried to jump from one stairwell landing to another, falling to his death. In 2013, another man was hurt when he fell from an escalator.
The Broncos said Tuesday night that they are reviewing security measures at the stadium to make sure they are doing everything they can to keep fans safe.
An autopsy will determine if intoxication may have played a role in Coy's fall.
