MADISON — Sam Santiago-Lloyd ran for 197 yards and a state all-division record five touchdowns, leading Brookfield East to a 42-36 victory over Monona Grove to win the WIAA Division 2 championship on Friday.
Quarterback Jake Graf added 179 yards rushing and a 22-yard touchdown pass for Brookfield East (12-2), which won its first state title in its first appearance.
Monona Grove (11-3) led 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-14 in the second quarter, but the Silver Eagles couldn't slow a Spartans rushing attack that ran for 378 yards and averaged 5.8 yards per carry.
Santiago-Lloyd handled the brunt of the work, carrying the ball a Division-2 record 37 times and scoring on runs of 6, 1, 7, 14 and 42 yards.
Monona Grove fell to 3-2 all-time in state finals.
