Would-be Federal Reserve bomber gets 30 years

(CNN) -- A Bangladeshi man who planned to blow up the New York Federal Reserve Bank was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis pleaded guilty in February to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. He could have received a life sentence.

Authorities said Nafis believed he was about to detonate a 1,000-pound bomb in front of the iconic building in lower Manhattan just before his arrest in an October sting operation.

In a statement given during his February plea in federal court in Brooklyn, he expressed regrets over the failed plot and said he no longer supports violent jihad.
