"We love coming here:" Malibu Open makes a splash on Milwaukee's lakefront

MILWAUKEE -- They're the best in the world and they've taken over Milwaukee's lakefront. Waterskiers were twisting, turning and jumping for cash prizes down at Veterans Park Lagoon on Saturday, August 29th.

It's the sixth time the Malibu Open Waterski Championship has made a splash downtown. The event was also free for the public to watch!

Waterskiing's top professional and junior athletes competed in traditional slalom and long-distance jumping for more than $64,000 in prize money.

Free-style jumping, barefoot skiing and show skiing were all part of the two-day event.

Waterskiers say even though it was gloomy out, Milwaukee is still a great location for the competition.

"The conditions are some of the best conditions we've skied on anywhere in the world this year and we love coming here. The lagoon is secluded from wind and from other boats and from chop on the water. So, it's just amazing. The crowds are still big, so we're having fun," said April Coble Eller, water skier.

Saturday was the last day of the competition.

Officials estimate around 10,000 spectators came to check out the event this year.
