"We feel safer now:" 17-year-old charged with groping female students near Carroll University

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- Charges come down against the 17-year-old accused of groping three girls near the Carroll University campus in Waukesha. Turns out, the suspect has been in trouble for similar accusations on school property before.

Students want to know why 17-year-old Jonathan Markwick of Racine, chose their campus -- and was seen wearing a Carroll University t-shirt.

"It's just a small community and for that to happen, that could be anyone," said Abby Pruitt, Carroll University student.

Students at Carroll University are exhaling now that Markwick is behind bars.

"That's a big relief. We feel safer now," said Morgan Czajkowski, Carroll University student.

Friday, September 25th Markwick was charged with three counts of fourth-degree sexual assault.

Investigators say the teen lurked on Carroll campus between September 18th and September 21st. In each of the cases, Markwick is accused of coming up to girls from behind and grabbing them inappropriately over their clothes, before sprinting off.

Markwick was arrested after being caught on surveillance cameras.

"For him to be 17, and wear Carroll stuff when he doesn't even attend Carroll, doesn't make sense," said Pruitt.

Turns out this is not Markwick's first time in trouble. Last May, Markwick was charged in a similar crime at Horlick High School in Racine. Investigators say Markwick grabbed a classmate. And when questioned by police, Markwick told investigators he was "messed up" after smoking marijuana, taking a shot and possibly some pills before coming to school.

Markwick eventually took a plea deal to the lesser charge of disorderly conduct.

Just as investigators were looking to solve the case at Carroll University, Markwick was arrested again in Racine.Investigators say Markwick was stumbling on a roadway Monday, September 21st when he fled from police, resisted arrest and told officers, "they should get a bullet in their head."

Students say they are confident this time he'll be receiving appropriate punishment.

"Knowing he has just done it before and he's just walking around doing it is kind of concerning, but as long as he is where he needs to be now, that is good," said Czajkowski.

Investigators in Racine found pot on Markwick as well. Now facing criminal charges in two counties, Markwick has a hold on his bail. He's currently being held in the Racine County Jail.
