OCONOMOWOC (WITI) -- A Watertown company is making an effort to recycle used mattresses and box springs instead of letting them end up in landfills. On Saturday morning, September 14th, Midwest Mattress Recovery set up a truck at the Oconomowoc Public Works garage for drop offs.
"Mattresses, box springs, futon mattresses, hide-a-beds, you name it," said Kyle Kopplin. "We break them down to their component parts and we recycle them."
One-by-one people drove up and dropped off mattresses as part of a green effort. The recycling fee is just $15.
"It was a good chance to get rid of some junk in the basement, help some people out," said Chris Hora. "It's better than just throwing it out and going to a landfill, so if they can do something with it and reuse it, that's great."
Kopplin says instead of tossing the unwanted items into the trash, they will be dismantled into useful pieces.
"The biggest one is going to be insulation and padding, wood made into mulch, metal can turn into anything," explained Kopplin. "They are 90 to 95% recyclable, each piece."
If you are unable to drop off your unwanted mattresses, the company also offers pick up services.
