Walworth County Highway Department worker struck by vehicle along I-43
ELKHORN -- A Walworth County Highway Department worker was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, October 14th after being struck by a vehicle on I-43. It happened around 1:15 p.m. in the area of the Centralia Street overpass.
When officers arrived on scene, the initial investigation revealed that a Walworth County Highway Department truck had recently pulled off of the highway onto the shoulder. The driver and passenger exited the truck in order to removed signs from a previous construction project when one of the employees was struck by a southbound vehicle.
The southbound vehicle was driven by a 67-year-old woman who remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The Walworth County Highway worker was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The employee was responsive and alert upon transport.
I-43 southbound remained open during the crash investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
The Elkhorn Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Walworth County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol, who is currently assiting with the crash investigation and reconstruction.
