Two killed in single-vehicle crash in Walworth County

WALWORTH COUNTY -- The Walworth County Sheriff's Department has confirmed two people were killed in a traffic accident just after 8:30 Sunday morning, after a single vehicle crashed down an embankment.

The accident occurred on Highway ES east of Lakeshore Drive in the Town of Sugar Creek - close to Silver Lake.

Deputies say a 2001 Volkswagen Crossover had been heading westbound on County Highway ES and was negotiating a curve when it left the road. After striking some trees, the vehicle came to rest at the bottom of a steep embankment, where parts were scattered Sunday afternoon.

Officials say the driver and passenger were ejected and found dead at the scene.

Officials have identified the two killed as 25-year-old Kyle Harris and 26-year-old Jennifer Johns, both of Elkhorn Lake. Officials say neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Jim Conrad saw the emergency response around 8:30 Sunday morning. "It was several sirens. Just happened to notice some squads went by and then I noticed the sirens stopping close," Conrad said.

Sometime after the vehicle impacted trees and scattered debris throughout the embankment, someone noticed and called in what turned out to be a double fatal crash. "It hurts - you never want to hear about that kind of stuff. It's unnerving I guess, shocking," one neighbor said.

Officials are still investigating what may have caused this crash. "You can't see off the side of the road at all. There are some really sharp curves through there," Conrad said.

The medical examiner's office will try to determine the specific cause of the deaths later this week.
