Temperatures in the 60s and 70s this week meant Moor Downs Golf Course could open up early

WAUKESHA -- Unseasonably warm temperatures this week have had people itching to get outdoors -- and the first tee time of the year is a sure sign spring is just around the corner.

The snow has melted and the grounds crews raked up and gathered leaves at Moor Downs Golf Course on Wednesday, March 9th for the first tee time of 2016.

"Even if there is snow on the course, we will come out and we will golf it," said Ron Wiemelt.

Wiemelt has been golfing at Moor Downs since 1980 and said he couldn't wait to play a round.

Lyle Steller couldn't resist either -- with temperatures around 70 degrees on Wednesday, March 9th.

"I'll call Moor Downs and see if they are going to open up, and sure enough someone answered the phone, and I got the first tee off time at 10:00 a.m.," said Steller.

And they weren't the only ones itching to get outside.

Even the City of Waukesha's mayor, along with the county executive and county board chairman took their meeting outside on Wednesday.

"We might have to have some course meetings to make sure the grounds are being keep in good condition," said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow.

Typically, Moor Downs opens the week of St. Patrick's Day -- so it opened about 10 days early this year. But there was one year where Moor Downs opened in January -- and that was in 2012.

Moor Downs Golf Course will have a slight change to the layout this year -- and they recently added footgolf.

"We are looking at some diversity we can provide for the course," said Farrow.

Moor Downs is celebrating its 101st year open. The hope long-term is to keep it open for years to come.

And short-term, given how wild Wisconsin weather can be...

"Hopefully we won't see any of the white stuff," said Farrow.

Moor Downs is one of three Waukesha County Parks golf courses. Naga-Waukee War Memorial and Wanaki Golf Course will open on Friday, March 11th at 10:00 a.m.
