Teen accused in Fond du Lac arrow incident to wear GPS device

FOND DU LAC -- The 16-year-old boy accused of shooting an arrow that struck a young girl was released to his mother after a hearing Wednesday morning, June 20th. He was also ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device. The boy had been placed in a group home following his arrest.

The Campbellsport boy was arrested roughly 10 days after seven-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg was struck by the arrow while playing out in front of her home on Main St. The arrow pierced through her liver, lung and spleen, but did not do major damage.

The teen is facing second-degree reckless injury and obstructing charges for the May 20th incident. Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink says the teen told police he was shooting at a squirrel and then heard a child scream.

Because he is not yet an adult, a judge ordered he not be identified. The prosecutor in the case wants the boy tried as an adult.

"We're only looking at two years of possible supervision for a person who might have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in restitution, as well as account for and be responsible for his ways, the crime that he committed and the impact on the victim," Fond du Lac County District Attorney Dan Kaminsky said.

After the court appearance Wednesday, Aryanna's mother was asked if she feels sorry for the teenage boy accused in this case.

"No. If he would have came forward right away, then I would have felt sorry, but the fact that he heard her scream and ran away and hid and lived it up for two weeks before somebody else had to turn him in -- I don't feel sorry for him," Laura Schneeberg said.

When asked if she forgives the boy, Aryanna's grandmother had this to say Wednesday:

"I want him to realize the seriousness of this whole situation. You can always forgive. Forgetting is another thing," Michelle Schneeberg said.

The teen will be back in court on August 1st. That's when the Fond du Lac County judge will determine if he will indeed be charged as an adult. The District Attorney has said a 17-year-old boy with the teen when the arrow was fired will not be charged.
