Suspect sought: Watertown police investigate theft of purse at Piggly Wiggly store
WATERTOWN -- The Watertown Police Department is investigating the theft of a purse that occurred on Tuesday, July 26th at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Memorial Drive.
According to police, a male subject approached a woman in the parking lot shortly before noon and took her purse from her cart. The victim was in the process of transferring her groceries to her vehicle at the time of the theft.
The suspect fled the parking lot on foot towards Boughton Street and the HWY 16 bypass. A number of citizens chased after the suspect, but were unable to locate him. The victim was not injured or physically threatened during the theft of her purse.
The suspect is described as a white male, 5’10 tall, 180 pounds, age 20 to 30. At the time of the theft he was wearing a dark colored T- Shirt, a black cap visor, and flip flops. The suspect may have sprained his ankle during the foot pursuit -- which is now causing the suspect to walk with a limp.
The Watertown Police Department would like to remind people to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to secure their personal property out of plain view of others as soon as possible.
