"Story was a fabrication:" Police disprove claim of puppy tossed into Rock River in Janesville

JANESVILLE -- Officials with the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin are caring for a puppy -- which was brought to them by a man claiming to have witnessed someone throw the animal into the Rock River in Janesville. Police now say that claim is false.

According to a post on the humane society's Facebook page Thursday, October 12th, the puppy who is less than a year old was brought to them by a man who said he was fishing when he saw a young individual walk the dog up the Memorial Bridge, unhook its leash and throw it into the water.

The Janesville Police Department investigated the incident and found the report to be false. Since the incident was never originally reported to police, an officer obtained the name of the person who turned in the dog and provided the story of how it was thrown into the river.

After interviewing that person and other members of the household, it was discovered that the story was a fabrication to avoid paying a fee to the humane society to surrender the dog.

There are no criminal charges in this incident as no false statements were made to police.
