S&R Egg Farm plans to rebuild after devastating fire

LA GRANGE (WITI) -- After a devastating fire at S&R Egg Farm Friday night, January 31st that destroyed one building, the owners say they will rebuild and plan to continue their operation.

One family has owned and operated the egg farm for three generations. The facility has been around since 1958.

The S&R family issued a statement Saturday that reads, in part: There was no damage to the company offices or facilities in which the eggs are processed and packaged for shipment to customers. The company plans to rebuild the facility with no disruption of service to its customer base during the rebuilding process.

About 60 departments battled the four-alarm fire into the early morning hours of Saturday, February 1st. Firefighters broke down what was left of one of the barns Saturday morning.

La Grange Fire Chief John Duerst says along with the help of all the crews on the scene, a 12-foot concrete wall in the barns prevented the fire from spreading.

Around 300,000 hens inside the burning barn were killed. No people were injured during the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
